artist reception october 19, 6-8pm
The Windows at the Wild Bird Fund will present the work of Autumn Kioti, opening October 19, 2017.
Continuing on the path of work created while artist-in-residence with the NYC Audubon Society on Governors Island, I will be creating an ongoing performative installation.
Inspired by tales of crone/witch Baba Yaga, who according to legend, lived in a house on chicken legs, I will paint, nest, and create inside the window on various days throughout the length of the exhibition.
My work draws its inspiration from the natural world, using it as a jumping off point to address societal and environmental issues and inform my practice of social justice and activism. She creates her own inks and materials primarily from foraged plants and found items.
Visit me and experience the work being done by the amazing humans at the Wild Bird Fund.
Signed open edition artist prints will be available for purchase at the opening.
Opening reception proceeds benefit the Wild Bird Fund.

SUMMER IN THE BIRD HOUSE
I will be reopening my studio on Governors Island this spring/summer/early fall, continuing my residency with the NYC AUDUBON SOCIETY. This year's focus:
My Strange Heterology
a year long process corresponding with the seasons, spring through winter
The current compulsion to tame nature, plunder the earth, our nurturer and sustainer, seems particularly significant when juxtaposed against the ongoing attempts to control and strip away the rights of women in our society.
This project will consist of works in progress including handmade books and zines, homemade ink and paper images, "at home" printmaking processes, such as gelatin monoprinting and kitchen lithography using a rolling pin as printing press, found item installation construction using sewing and weaving techniques, and a performance series equating the erosion of environmental protections with the degradation of women's rights.
I also hope to have DIY workshops open for all ages. Keep your eye out for more information.
Any time I am in the studio, I am open to visitors.
ON TOUR
My piece, "this is what it feels like..." part of "untitled pairing" is on its way to Paris (if only I could fit in the box) for the second leg of its world tour.
It will be showing at

works from the print shop and the artist studio
co-curated by Coronado & Kioti
Coronado Print Studio is a collaborative print project located in El Barrio, East Harlem, New York City. This exhibition features recently published selections by artists who live and work uptown. In contrast to the replicable nature of the print-based process, each artist is also represented by instances of their non print-based work.
Coronado and Kioti (via Coronado Print Studio) aim to provide varied points of view, establishing a dynamic transcultural dialogue presented by a diverse coalition of artists. Together these artists create a collective action against marginalization characterized by works dealing with issues of race, gender, immigration and that which challenges the status quo.
Through their exploration of the current sociopolitical environment, these artists craft a map for navigating a more integrated and equitable society.

| NEW SCRAPS |
Interdisciplinary artist and scavenger Autumn Kioti works from from society's discards, marrying subconscious narrative with mythic and folk impulses. Using the natural world as an in road, she frequently addresses the issues of mental health, reproductive justice, gender/sexual identity, environmental and food justice. To this end, she scavenges bits of everything from history, science and literature, to her circus and aerial training, even David Attenborough animal documentaries, in the creation of ritual-inspired participatory performances, works on paper, printwork, installation.
Playing with the notion of craft, conventionally considered "women's work," her work often incorporates weaving, knitting, embroidery, food preparation, taking it in unexpected directions.
She is also an urban forager/scavenger, feeding herself and her family from a sustainable diet of edible vegetation found in her local parks and garden as much as possible.
Select site-specific performance/installations include: WHISPERING VOICES (2015); whisper to me... (2015); segment I [in respect for food] (2015); AESCULAPIAN HARVEST [in respect for food] (2015); re-sounding the landscape: BRONX (2016); WHISPERS IN THE AIR (2016); Making the ROUNDS (2016); re-creation (2016); BECOMING THEM: a fantasy narrative on our relationship to our tech devices (2016); RUN:rabbit (2016), IDEAS IN THE AIR, a conversation with Fritjov Capra (2016); this is NOT a dance | this is not a composition (2017).
Current resident artist with the Audubon Society on Governors Island in NYC, resident artist/recipient of NOoSPHERE Circle of Fire Performance Art Grant, artist-in-residence at Santa Fe Art Institute's first themed residency (FOOD JUSTICE), resident at Art Monastery Italia, Autumn participated along with Art Monastery and RETE in the development of the first Caramanico Teatri D'Arte (a Pescara), currently collaborates with Pepe Coronado/ Coronado Print Studio and has an upcoming installation/performance with Art in FLUX.
Past/present collaborators include: master printmaker Pepe Coronado, biologist/TEDtalk veteran Sara Lewis, naturalist Gabriel Willow, Eric Sanderson (author of Mannahatta), Chef Joel Coleman, Katy Gunn, Sol Kjok, Suprina, Kid Lucky, Maria Hupfield, RSM, Shaman Misha Nogha, Jeanine Alfieri, Alexis Elton, Anthony Collins.
She is also a member of AEA, SAG-AFTRA, has taught flying trapeze, worked as an animal educator, has performed as an aerialist worldwide, among other teaching, writing, choreography, and performance credits.
Autumn lives in Harlem with her best friend Mademoiselle Magdalena the leopard dog.

COME BE PART OF THE MOMENT!
(Addendum: How do I navigate the inherent feminist/activist aspect of my work? I m having a hard time with this, because it angers me that to say I am a feminist artist not only puts me in a box, but it also has the potential to label me as a pariah. STILL. In 2o14. When I talk about it, I watch for the inevitable eye roll, the sigh that means I am not longer being taken seriously. SERIOUSLY?!
So, what then? Do I leave it out and hope that somehow, osmotic-ly, the viewer will "get it"? I do like to leave room for the viewer to interpret and decide for herself. Or do I shout it out? And take the knocks [that are coming either way].
But, wait, I think my real questions is:
Why should I have to decide?)
THE SHORT OF IT
Autumn Kioti has been seen from Miami to Indonesia as an actress, dancer, fighter, and circus artist. She originated the role of Cassandra in THE HIVE, based on Euripides' TROJAN WOMEN, has performed at La Mama, Lincoln Center, Madison Square Garden, and more, and has appeared in award-winning films worldwide. As a kinetic artist: NYFA, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Streb, and more. Fight choreography: FringeNYC, the Wild Project, teraNOVA Collective, and more. She recently appeared as a stunt woman on POWER, a STARZ Original Series.

THE LONG(ER) OF IT
I have been lucky enough to have had the opportunity to perform as an actor, kinetic artist, and circus artist throughout the world. It hasn't been a glamorous life, but the tough scrabbling life of a scavenging coyote girl. And I wouldn't trade it for anything!
A few of my more unique experiences: l; performing on the streets of NYC as a gigantic monster created from 500 plastic bags (and subsequently put on trial in Union Square); being dropped and raised at high speeds from the top of Madison Square Gardens while performing aerial choreography (including a number where I was wearing a 25 lb backpack filled with LED lights and a portable smoke machine!); performing fight choreography as a spy in the streets of DUMBO (and having to explain ourselves to various officers and teamsters as they attempted to arrest us or threaten us with ACTUAL violence respectively). I've nearly been set on fire while performing aerial fight choreography with a fire breather and five person dragon, been graffitied while in midair on a silk; laid naked in the snow while being covered in paint; performed excerpts from my kinetic art piece, grounded, at NYFA and participated on panels focusing on activism and feminism in the arts (including a stint with the Feminist Tea Party), and as an actor have been a part of many incredible productions.
Recently I was diagnosed with a degenerative joint disorder (Ehlers-Danlos) and was told I must give up on being a crazy mover, fighter, and aerialist, but I hope to prove the doctors wrong! (And I do hope they'll keep up with my blog while I do so.)
It's been a trip, and I hope to continue for as long as I can move this body!
